Bifrost Free download

Bifrost user guide

From signing up to your first cross-border friend. This guide reflects the current public version of the app.

1. Download and sign up

Get the app from the download page. At sign-up you choose your country or region, and it cannot be changed later, so pick the real one. You can sign up with email or a Google account (phone numbers in mainland China).

2. Set up your profile

Add a photo, a short bio, your interests, and what you are working on. For language exchange, list your native language and the one you are learning. The more specific, the better your matches. Before a mutual light-up, others only see a translucent version of your photo.

3. Pick the country you want to meet

On the companion screen, choose a country or region; it defaults to your own. There are 25 to choose from. Each card shows the person’s interests, goals, profile, and match score.

4. Light up and light up back

If someone looks like a fit, light them up. If they light you up within 12 hours, you are connected one-to-one; otherwise no connection is made and you can keep browsing. Light-ups within the same country are free; cross-border light-ups are a membership benefit.

5. Chat with one-tap translation

Once connected, start chatting. Tap “Translate” under any message to see a translation below the original; posts in Discover can be translated too.

6. Seven-day journey and shared to-dos

  • Start a one-to-one seven-day journey: write down each day’s to-dos and see each other’s list and progress.
  • Be specific: “speak Chinese for 15 minutes” is easier to finish and compare than “study Chinese”.
  • After seven days, clear photos unlock and each of you decides whether to continue. The journey is always seven days; “21 days” only refers to the book publishing check-in.

7. Discover

Publish posts with images, each set to public, friends only, or only me; browse, comment on, and save posts from people in other countries.

8. Direct and group chats

Chat one-to-one with friends, or create and join group chats with announcements and QR code invites.

9. Focus timer

Start a focus session alone or invite a friend, and share your focus timer.

10. Bifrost AI

The built-in Bifrost AI assistant answers questions, helps you think and write, supports voice input, and can run scheduled AI tasks. AI-generated content is clearly labeled; everyone recommended to you is a real person.

11. Use Bifrost on your computer

Install the Windows, macOS, or Linux app from the download page and sign in by scanning the QR code with your phone.

12. Privacy and safety

  • The current version does not request location permission or collect precise location.
  • Report inappropriate content, turn on youth mode when needed, and delete your account in Settings.
  • See the U.S. Privacy Policy, U.S. Terms, or the Privacy Policy for other regions.
