Chinese–English language exchange: practice Mandarin with native speakers

The hard part of a language exchange is finding the right partner. Bifrost puts people in China who want to practice English and people abroad who want to practice Chinese in the same app.

Why use Bifrost for language exchange

  • Real native speakers: pick Mainland China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong to see real people there.
  • One-to-one: a connection needs a mutual light-up, so practice stays focused.
  • Translation as a safety net: tap to translate when you get stuck.
  • Seven days at a time: start a seven-day journey and put “speak Chinese for 15 minutes” on your shared to-do list.

How to start

  1. 1

    Write down your language goal

In your profile, list your native language, the language you are learning, and your level, for example “Native English, learning Mandarin, HSK 3”.

  2. 2

Pick a country and light up

Choose the country or region and light up people who look like a good fit.

  3. 3

Light each other up in 12 hours

Once they light you back, you are connected one-to-one.

  4. 4

    Practice a little every day

Agree on a time and a language split, and track practice with shared to-dos.

A sample seven-day exchange

  1. Day 1: introduce yourselves and agree on a daily time, half Chinese and half English.
  2. Day 2: describe your city and a local dish in the other person’s language.
  3. Day 3: each bring five new expressions and quiz each other.
  4. Day 4: correct each other’s three most common mistakes and add them to your to-dos.
  5. Day 5: talk about a festival or custom and compare.
  6. Day 6: try ten minutes in the other language only, without translation.
  7. Day 7: review the week and decide whether to continue for another seven days.

Safety tips

  • Photos stay translucent until a seven-day journey is completed.
  • Do not share your address, ID numbers, or bank details; report inappropriate content in the app.
