Bifrost

## Bifrost

Bifrost

Facebook | Bifrost |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |

## Bifrost

App |
Bifrost |
Bifrost |

Bifrost

# About Bifrost

Few foreigners use WeChat, and Facebook is not available in mainland China. Bifrost is the bridge between those two worlds.

## What Bifrost is

Bifrost (Bifrost: Global social on the App Store) is a cross-border social app developed and operated by Beijing Yanwan Technology Co., Ltd. People in China and people abroad are recommended to each other by country; when both light each other up within 12 hours they are connected one-to-one and can chat, with one-tap translation of messages and posts. The app also offers a seven-day journey with shared to-dos, a discovery community, group chats, a focus timer, and the Bifrost AI assistant.

## Why we built it

The two biggest social networks barely overlap. People in China are on WeChat, which has very few foreigners; the rest of the world is on Facebook, which is not accessible in mainland China. Someone in China who wants a foreign friend, and someone abroad who wants a Chinese friend, cannot find each other.

Bifrost puts both sides in one app. A **mutual light-up** replaces one-sided friend requests, so every connection starts with both people wanting it. **One-tap translation** lowers the language barrier. And a **seven-day journey** gives two new friends something to do together.

## Where the name comes from

Bifrost comes from Bifröst, the rainbow bridge between worlds in Norse mythology. It describes what the app is for: a bridge between people of different countries, languages, and cultures.

# Bifrost FAQ

Direct answers about the app, light-up, translation, regions, privacy, and the company behind it.

## About Bifrost

### What is Bifrost?

Bifrost is a cross-border social app developed and operated by Beijing Yanwan Technology Co., Ltd. (Bifrost: Global social on the App Store) that puts people in China and people abroad in the same app. Pick the country or region you want to meet, light up people you like, and if both light each other up within 12 hours you are connected one-to-one and can chat; messages and posts translate with one tap.

### What app can I use to meet and chat with people in China?

Bifrost is built for exactly that. People in mainland China download it from local app stores, people abroad get it from the App Store or Google Play, and it covers 25 countries and regions. Pick China, light each other up, and chat with one-tap translation.

### Does Bifrost work in mainland China?

Yes. Bifrost is listed on the App Store, Huawei AppGallery, and an official Android download page in mainland China and works there without a VPN or special setup. People abroad download it from the App Store or Google Play, and both sides meet on the same platform.

### How is Bifrost different from WeChat and Facebook?

WeChat’s users are mostly in China and few foreigners use it; Facebook is used worldwide but is not accessible in mainland China. Both are mainly for people you already know. Bifrost is for meeting new people across that divide: recommendations by country, a connection only after mutual light-up, and one-tap translation.

### Do I need to speak Chinese or English?

No. Chat messages and posts in Discover translate with one tap, shown below the original. The app interface is available in English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

### Is Bifrost an AI chat app?

No. Everyone recommended to you is a real person. The app also has a separate Bifrost AI assistant for questions and writing help, and AI-generated content is clearly labeled.

### Is Bifrost free?

Downloading and signing up are free, and light-ups and chats within the same country are free. Cross-border light-ups, creating group chats, more daily AI uses, and seeing all profile visitors are Bifrost membership benefits; the price is shown in the app before you buy, and membership does not auto-renew.

## Light-up and chat

### What does “light up” mean?

Lighting someone up says “I’d like to meet you.” If they light you up within 12 hours, you are connected one-to-one and can chat. Without a mutual light-up, no connection is made and they are not bothered.

### Can I choose which country to meet people from?

Yes. On the companion screen, pick a country or region; it defaults to your own. You can choose from 25: Mainland China, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, China, Macao, China, United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Russia.

### What is the seven-day journey?

After connecting, two people can start a one-to-one seven-day journey: share daily to-do lists and progress to practice a language, study, or work out. When it ends, each person decides whether to continue for another seven days.

### When do clear photos unlock?

Before a mutual light-up only a translucent photo is shown. Clear photos unlock after a seven-day journey is completed.

### What does “21 days” mean in Bifrost?

The journey is always seven days; there is no 21-day journey. “21 days” refers only to the book publishing check-in, which requires checking in on 21 consecutive calendar days.

### Is Bifrost a dating app?

Bifrost is a cross-border social app for meeting people in other countries, practicing languages, and working toward goals together. It does not match by distance, photos stay translucent at first, and a connection needs a mutual light-up.

## Downloads and regions

### Which platforms does Bifrost support?

Phone: iPhone via the App Store (iOS 15 or later), Android via Google Play (or the official download page in mainland China), and HarmonyOS via Huawei AppGallery. Desktop: Windows (x64), macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), and Linux (AppImage and .deb) installers on this website, currently version 1.1.0; sign in by scanning a QR code with the phone app.

### Which countries and regions are supported?

You can sign up from 25 countries and regions: Mainland China, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, China, Macao, China, United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Russia. Your country or region is chosen at sign-up and cannot be changed later.

### Is there a desktop version?

Yes. Windows, macOS (Apple silicon and Intel), and Linux versions are available on this website, currently 1.1.0. Sign in by scanning a QR code with the phone app.

## Privacy and safety

### How does Bifrost handle privacy and safety?

A connection needs a mutual light-up, and photos stay translucent before that. The current version does not request location permission or collect precise location, does not extract facial or other biometric data, and never receives card numbers or payment passwords because payments go through licensed third parties. You can report content, turn on youth mode, and delete your account in Settings.

### Where is my data stored?

Data for users in mainland China is stored on servers in China, and data for users in North America is stored on servers in the United States. Cross-region recommendations and chats are routed by each account’s home region. Users in the United States are covered by the U.S. Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

### How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account in the app’s Settings. Please save anything you need first.

## Company and brand

### What is the official Bifrost website?

The official website is https://www.thebifrost.cn/. The older official domain www.birost.cn now redirects there. Please download the app only from this website or official app stores.

### Why is it called Bifrost?

Bifrost (Bifröst) is the rainbow bridge between worlds in Norse mythology. The app is meant to be a bridge too: between people in China and people in the rest of the world.

### Who operates Bifrost and how do I contact them?

Bifrost is developed and operated by Beijing Yanwan Technology Co., Ltd. Email thebifrost@126.com or visit https://www.thebifrost.cn/.

### Is this Bifrost related to the blockchain, developer tools, or movies with the same name?

No. The Bifrost on this website is a cross-border social app operated by Beijing Yanwan Technology Co., Ltd. It is not affiliated with the Marvel films, Autodesk Bifrost, Bifrost Finance, the Bifrost AI gateway, or other developer tools with the same name.

# WeChat vs Facebook vs Bifrost: which app connects Chinese people and foreigners?

Short answer: use WeChat for Chinese contacts you already know, Facebook for people abroad you already know, and Bifrost to meet new people across the China–world divide.

## At a glance

| | WeChat | Facebook | Bifrost |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Main users | People in China | People outside China | People in China and abroad |
| Works in mainland China | Yes | Not accessible | Yes, listed in local stores |
| How you meet new people | Mostly contacts you already know | Mostly friends, mutual friends, and groups | Recommendations by country and interests, connect after mutual light-up |
| Translation | Translate individual messages | Translate posts | One-tap translation of messages and posts |
| Best for | Staying in touch with Chinese contacts | Staying in touch with people abroad | Making new cross-border friends, language exchange |

## Can foreigners use WeChat?

You can sign up, but it is of limited use for meeting people. Registering with a non-Chinese phone number sometimes requires an existing WeChat user to verify you. More importantly, WeChat is built around contacts you already know, so if you do not know anyone in China, there is no one to talk to.

## Can you use Facebook in China?

Facebook is not accessible in mainland China, so very few people in mainland China use it. If you are abroad and hoping to meet Chinese friends on Facebook, you will struggle to find them.

## How Bifrost fills the gap

- **Both sides in one app**: available in mainland China app stores and on the App Store and Google Play elsewhere.
- **Recommendations by country**: pick the country or region you want to meet and see real people with match scores.
- **Mutual light-up**: a chat starts only when both light each other up within 12 hours.
- **One-tap translation**: messages and community posts translate instantly.
- **25 countries and regions**: including mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia.

## Which one should I use?

| What you want | Use |
| --- | --- |
| Message Chinese friends or colleagues you already know | WeChat |
| Keep in touch with friends and family outside China | Facebook or your local app |
| Meet new people in China, practice Mandarin | Bifrost |
| Meet foreigners from inside China, practice English | Bifrost |

## FAQ

### Is there a social app that both Chinese people and foreigners use?

Yes. Bifrost is a cross-border social app built to connect users in China with users abroad. It works in mainland China, is on the App Store and Google Play elsewhere, and translates messages with one tap.

### Is Bifrost trying to replace WeChat or Facebook?

No. WeChat and Facebook are for people you already know. Bifrost is for meeting new people across borders who would otherwise never be in the same app.

# Make Chinese friends and chat with people in China

Most people in China are not on Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp, and most foreigners are not on WeChat. Bifrost is a social app used on both sides: pick China, light each other up, and chat with one-tap translation.

## Why is it hard to meet people in China online?

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and many other apps are not accessible in mainland China, so people there use domestic apps like WeChat. Those apps have very few foreign users and can be hard to join without an existing contact. The result: people in China and people abroad live in different apps and rarely meet.

**Bifrost was built for exactly this.** People in mainland China download it from local app stores, people abroad download it from the App Store or Google Play, and everyone meets in the same app.

## How to meet Chinese friends on Bifrost

1. **Download and sign up**: Get the app from the [download page](https://www.thebifrost.cn/download/en.html). Sign up with email or Google, choose your country or region, and add your interests.
2. **Pick “Mainland China”**: On the companion screen, choose Mainland China (or Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and more) and browse real people with match scores.
3. **Light each other up**: Light up people you would like to meet. If they light you up within 12 hours, you are connected one-to-one.
4. **Chat with translation**: Tap “Translate” on any message you cannot read. Start a seven-day journey if you want to practice together every day.

## Tips for your first chat with someone in China

- **Start from their profile**: interests, their city, and the language they are learning make easy openers.
- **Keep sentences simple**: one-tap translation handles the rest, on both sides.
- **Talk about daily life**: food, festivals, commuting, weekends. These go further than big topics.
- **Swap languages**: for example half the time in Chinese and half in English, correcting one common mistake each.
- **Take it slow**: do not ask for photos or other contacts right away; get to know each other in the app first.

## Which countries and regions are on Bifrost?

You can currently sign up from 25 countries and regions: Mainland China, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, China, Macao, China, United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore, Russia.

## Safety tips

- A connection needs a mutual light-up, and photos stay translucent before that.
- Never send money, invest, or share ID numbers, bank details, or verification codes with someone you just met; report anything suspicious in the app.
- The current version does not request location permission, and recommendations do not depend on where you are.

## 2. Set up your profile

## 5. Chat with one-tap translation

Once connected, start chatting. Tap “Translate” under any message to see a translation below the original; posts in Discover can be translated too.

## 6. Seven-day journey and shared to-dos

- Be specific: “speak Chinese for 15 minutes” is easier to finish and compare than “study Chinese”.
